ToggleWhat Is a Rising Sign?
The rising sign is the zodiac constellation rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment an individual is born. While the Sun sign represents a person’s core identity and inner motivations, the rising sign (Ascendant) determines the social mask reflected to the outside world, physical appearance, first impression, and defense mechanisms.
Accepted as the starting point of the 1st House (ASC line) in the astrological birth chart, this sign shapes how a person begins their life journey and their immediate reactions to environmental conditions. A person’s aura and how they are perceived from the outside are directly related to the position of the ruling planet of the rising sign in the chart.
How Is the Rising Sign Calculated?
To determine the rising sign, three essential pieces of information are required: birth date (day/month/year), exact birth time, and birth place (the latitude and longitude coordinates of the city).
The logic of the calculation is based on finding which degree of the zodiac belt is intersected by the horizon line when viewed from a specific location on Earth at the moment of birth. Birthplace data clarifies the angle of the horizon line by determining the coordinates on Earth. Birth time fixes the sky chart, which changes due to the Earth’s rotation. These three pieces of data are processed with astronomical ephemeris tables, and the sign and degree on the horizon are mathematically calculated.
How Accurate Are the Results of the Calculation Tool?
Our calculation tool uses international-standard astronomical databases and ephemeris libraries in the background. Therefore, the software’s calculation methodology is flawless, and the technical data obtained is a precise mathematical fact.
The accuracy of the result here depends entirely on the transparency of the data entered by the user. Even knowing the birth time 10-15 minutes incorrectly can completely change the result, especially on horizon lines near sign transition boundaries (29 degrees or 0 degrees). The system also automatically takes past daylight saving time/winter time (DST) practices into account. As long as the user enters the birth time and place correctly, the result carries 100% astronomical accuracy.
How Often Does the Rising Sign Change?
The Earth completes its full 360-degree rotation around its own axis in approximately 24 hours. Since there are 12 signs in the zodiac belt, the average time a sign stays on the horizon is considered to be 2 hours. In this context, the rising sign changes approximately every two hours during the day.
However, this duration is not a fixed time period. Due to the Earth’s axial tilt and spherical shape, there are signs in the zodiac with short ascension and long ascension. In the Northern Hemisphere, where Turkey is also located, the time Aquarius, Pisces and Aries remain on the horizon can drop to around 1 hour and 10 minutes, while the rising duration of Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio can reach up to 2.5 hours. This astronomical difference shows how critical even minutes can be in rising sign calculation.
